View Full Version : [Guild Wars] Tyrian Grandmaster Cartographer Tips & Maps

:( Please read the following before asking for my help.

Thanks to deuterio.net (http://www.deuterio.net), my Guild Wars map guides are now visible to the whole world. That's a good thing - any help you can find through search engines is great!

For the most part, the people that have contacted me in game about these cartographer guides have been very nice, but, alas, thanks to a rare few I'm editing these to remove direct references to my contact information.

If you have a question for me, and really want to get in touch you can register here (or on Guild Wars Guru (http://www.guildwarsguru.com/) my handle there is LicensedLuny) and leave me a PM, but I won't list my IGN here anymore.

I'm very sorry I have to list all this, but it seems I do. If you do contact me and I don't answer (right away or ever) here are some common reasons why that may be.

I'm busy or afk. It's a game ... a game I play. I know it shocks some people, but my top priority in life will not always be to help complete strangers get their map titles.
You're asking me to look at your map and find the spots you're missing. Sorry, that's not a service I generally provide. There seem to be some very nice people on Guru (http://www.guildwarsguru.com/) that have tricks for image comparison. If you want someone to find the spots you're missing, that's a better place to look.

You're initial message lacks what I consider to be basic manners when first approaching someone that doesn't know you. Wait a couple days, and try again, this time remembering some of the basic concepts of politeness that your parents (should've) taught you.
Your question is about something I've already covered and answered to the best of my ability on one of these posts. The fact that you've asked leaves me with a strong suspicion that you haven't taken the time to read what I took the time to write. Without further clarification from you as to why your specific question isn't covered, I'm not likely to take the time to answer.
You're requesting me to run you someplace, tell you how to get someplace, tell you the build for getting someplace. I am not a runner, nor am I a build expert. Any place I've found unusually tricky to get to after finishing the whole game, I've made note of on these posts. If you can't be bothered to really go out and explore, then I don't really need to help you get the Grandmaster Cartographer title.
I assure you that repeated messages akin to "dude wtf answer me already u damn noob!" will only serve to guarantee I add you to my ignore list.

Again, I apologize to the vast majority of people out there that I had to put such a disclaimer up in the first place. I hope everyone that wants the GMC titles has a terrific time exploring such wonderful worlds.

Hi all,

In an effort to help other people interested in the Tyrian Grandmaster title, I'm putting together this post with my mapping tips, theories, and screenshots. WARNING - There are some storyline spoilers in here, mostly in some of the mission notes. Just so you know I'm qualified ...

Credits
I must give a lot of credit here, as I didn't get that title by myself.

Doc for being my original wandering partner. Thanks to Doc's companionship and tolerance I already had 70% when the titles first appeared.

Drax for help, inspiration and competition. Drax and I spent A LOT of time pursuing our mapping titles together. Without his good company and assistance I wouldn't even know about most of the unusual places mentioned below.

Firestorm gets credit for my original inspiration to get this title. He also gets credit for first showing us the Jump The Wall and Walk on Air tricks in Dunes of Despair.

Morgana gets credit for this post. If not for her, it wouldn't have occurred to me to make such a post.

My Friends, all of them, in guild and not in guild, helped a lot by joining up on teams and letting us add map uncovering to the list of objectives.

Countless people on Guru I spent a lot of time reading the several cartographer posts on the Guild Wars Guru (http://www.guildwarsguru.com/) forums. Helpful people there posted tips and maps, without which there would still be even more things I didn't know to look for.

NCSoft and ArenaNet for the game. They of course own all the copyrights on the maps. (Humblest apologies if I'm breaking laws by posting this - only trying to help other players.)

Last but not least, Thanks to ImageShack for Free Image Hosting (http://imageshack.us) :)

Theory

As you may or may not know, there are parts of the Tyrian map (like arenas and the old PvP island south of LA) that you can't get to anymore. These places were closed before the titles first appeared (around the release of Factions.) There are also two places that you can't get to once your past a certain level, the Ascalon and Shiverpeak Arena battle maps.

Disclaimer - I do have a little island south of LA uncovered that's no longer accessible. It was from a guild hall and/or the old PvP outpost. It counts towards my title. Luckilly for this post, I know there are still parts and edges of the Fire Island areas and missions that I haven't uncovered. So I still have total faith that you can get 100% without that little island.

So if 100% of the map really was 100%, only people that went to the old arenas could get the max title. That's not the case. People that have been to the now-inaccessible arenas do get map percentage credit for those areas uncovered, but people (like me) that never played on those maps can still get Grandmaster titles.

My theory is that the devs, in their infinite wisdom, scaled back the marker for "100%" to actually be closer to 97% or so of the absolute total possible uncovered area on the Tyrian map. This way, people that had the arena maps get credit, and people that don't can still get the title by uncovering areas you weren't supposed to get to. (FYI, the count in your title bar does stop going up once it says 100% even if you uncover more bits of map.) Because of this, as you look at other people's maps you'll sometimes notice that you have uncovered tiny bits they're missing, yet they may still have the 100% title.

General Tips

95% is easy It may not seem like it, but compared to the last 5% or so, the first 95% was easy to get. You got it from going to all the areas and uncovering what you thought was the whole map. That's when it gets really hard to even see what you're still missing. You find you need to take your Protector of Tyria character back to early Ascalon and run through the missions again.
For those of you already on max characters, I can't offer more help than this post. For those of you still working your way through the storyline, I advise that whenever possible, spend the time now to push edges, compare maps, uncover everything you can on the areas you're already exploring for missions and quests. That is, if you intend to get the title on that character. It can be rather a pain to have to do things like Nolani, Borlis Pass, and Dragon's Gullet over again when you've finished all the missions. Of course, this requires that you're either solo, with henchies, or with a team of people that all understand and agree that you'll be mapping.

1% is huge You'll be amazed how hard it is to get 0.1% much less a whole 1%. Drax figured that 0.1% equates to about 3 or 4 tiny patches of map uncovered, and I'd say he's about right. You'll find a spot missing, run out and uncover it, but you won't see your percentage increase a bit until you get a couple more tiny spots to go with it. Rest assured, the game is keeping track even if it only displays down to tenths of a percent.

Edges Count! This can't be stressed enough, and you may not believe it until you're at 96.2% (I didn't, even though I was warned.) On most maps, areas beyond the edge of where you can actually get to will uncloud if you walk along the very edges ... and I mean the VERY EDGES. At times, you have to push up against the edges, into and up/down on the little jagged spots that you used to just be annoyed about getting stuck on. Sometimes, you even have to get up into those little spots and pan around for the bit (aka "wiggle") of the map beyond to uncover - standing there wasn't enough. You'll also find a fair number of places where there's a tiny, non-apparent path up on an edge that takes you further than it looks possible to go. My favorite, and likely the largest, example is one of the "Edge of the World" spots in Talus Chute, north of the Ice Caves outpost.

http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/457/lunysedgeoftheworldpathsz5.th.jpg (http://img84.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lunysedgeoftheworldpathsz5.jpg)

The way up here doesn't look like you should be able to walk on it.

http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/963/lunysedgeoftheworldpathsb3.th.jpg (http://img84.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lunysedgeoftheworldpathsb3.jpg)

Also be careful to map the edges of beaches. Doing so uncovers map out in the water - where it's really hard to spot if it's clouded or not on the map. Beaches like the north edge of North Kryta Province, beaches in the Kryta missions, beaches in towns, icy beaches along the south edge of Witman's Folly, edges of maps in the Fire Islands, etc.

On the same thread as beaches, mind the docks. There are lots of places with a dock (and sometimes even a boat) on beaches. If you can, run out on that dock and wiggle at the edges.

OFFTOPIC and EDIT ON -
People have asked me what I mean by "Edge of the World," so here it is ... The game only displays the map you're on. Usually this isn't an issue since the map you're on has high walls and/or scenery in the distance. There are places, though, where the map you're on sits next to another map. If you can get close enough to see the common edge on your compass, it'll look like a sharp line with just brown cardboard beyond. Then there a very few places where not only can you see the edge on the compass but you can walk right up to it. When you walk up to it, again the game doesn't display other maps, so all you see is this never ending ocean. If you pan the camera (right mouse button click and drag usually) around so you're looking back at the map you're on, you'll often find you and your teammates disappear from view. When you see that, it's like the "edge of the world."

I know of three places in the game where you can see this: Charr staging area in the Great Northern Wall mission, the above hidden path in Talus Chute (noted above,) and the beginning of Rurik's path in the Frost Gate mission. If you find or know of others, please do share ... stuff like that is fun to go see.
- OFFTOPIC and EDIT OFF

Towns and Outposts The map you uncover while in a town counts towards the total percentage. Compared to explorable areas, it's incredibly easy to run the edges of towns, too. If you haven't really looked closely before, you'll be amazed at how big some of these towns really are. (There are also some absolutely breathtaking views from little corners and rarely travelled parts of towns.)
On that note, the Ascalon and Shiverpeak arenas - the two arenas left on Tyria. They're for low-level characters. Even if you're past the level requirement (or you don't want to PvP) you can still get to the outposts for these places by talking to the Arena Guard NPC's in Ascalon City and Yak's Bend.
Look Closely
If you're going for these titles, odds are very good that sooner or later you'll start comparing your map to other people's maps. A quick glance probably won't do it - you have to really study the two maps (side-by-side if possible) to spot the differences.
If and when you find something missing on your map in an area you're absolutely sure you covered, it's almost certainly a case like I mentioned before - you need to get up in a little nook and pan around or there's a non-obvious path you missed.

Please note that this Tyrian guide, my first map guide, has 3 different pages (links should be below and/or to the right on your screen.) This is page 1.

Think Beyond What The Game Expects of You
There are mappable areas, especially in missions, beyond where the storyline expects you to go, like places behind the final boss - the one that killing results in ending the mission. I hope it goes without saying that you should try to map around closed in areas with final bosses and do the bonus areas, as I'm not going to list every single mission here. Here's a list of less obvious places, mostly in missions:
Great Northern Wall Mission: You can run back where all those Charr come from after the cutscene. (There's another edge of the world spot up top.) Wait until you're attributes are maxed out and you have a good running build. Go into the mission and run through/behind the Charr invasion force. Their camp is pretty big. There's a couple other paths in that mission further down the path you're supposed to run along back to the Captain. They're both right turns. It may take you more than one run to do it all, since the timer starts after the cutscene and you die if it runs out.
Ruins of Surmia Mission: Ok, I don't know how to get to this one and Drax said he tried it and found it impossible, but ... Remember the gate where the Ember Bearers appear and start their walk for the bonus? Beyond that gate, way up there, I've seen a devourerer boss, so it seems like there should be some way to get up there. If anyone finds a way, please do share!
It's not a trick, but there's a chunk of map up north in the tar pit. There's also an edge up there that uncovers if you get out on a little spit and wiggle back and forth.
Nolani Mission: After Rurik makes the guard open the gate and goes on another idiotic rampage, there's quite a large area back there. Follow Rurik and keep him alive (or mission's failed) until he finally stops around some Charr. At that point, you can back track and clear a lot of area south of the wall. You can also push some edges in a ruined building behind the final boss (during which time the boss will be attacking you - watch out any henchies or people with you don't kill him until everyone has uncovered the map in that little building.)
The Frost Gate Mission:
EDIT - Mar. 2007 - This no longer seems to work as described below. The rebirthing a dead party member up onto a bridge trick doesn't work anymore (the game seems to understand the Z-axis now.) I haven't been able to jump onto that path personally yet, but I'm told it can still be done using necrotic traversal or consume corpse on a wolf (assuming a wolf spawns within range on the path you need to jump to.) I hear you can have a MM sac to death on some bridge that Rurik and the Soldiers run under, thus letting the minions kill off the soldiers and use their corpse to jump to. I haven't tried it or seen it done. - end EDIT
With a good team of friends and some suicidal trickery, you can get off the main mission path and down onto the path Rurik follows. You can also get to my favorite edge of the world spot back up top at his starting point. First go through the mission and stop all the siege weapons so you won't be bothered. Afterwards, you may get lucky and find a snow wolf on the other path that you can kill and use his corpse for necrotic traversal. It's probably easier to simply go back to the icey cave area and stand under the bridge. Have one person THAT HAS REBIRTH EQUIPPED die directly under the bridge (watch out for henchies here as they'll try to heal or rez you.) Then have another person stand on his/her corpse under the bridge and rebirth them. You'll be rebirthed on top, up on the bridge. At that point, everyone else can die and the person up on the bridge can rebirth them all up onto Rurik's path. This strategy requires that everyone have a means of suicide within range of the first jumper, like necro health sacrifice skills or a vampiric weapon they can hold.
Also in this mission, there's quite a fair bit of area and hidden pathways down the paths that Stone Summit come from when you're lifting the gate. Activate two of the three levers to trigger their advance and open the gate. Once they've all come and you've killed them, you can explore both sides before triggering the final lever.
Gates of Kryta Mission: There's an unapparent path in the beginning beyond the little house with a fenced yard on the East side. (I think it's near where you pick up Oink for the bonus.) That path lets you push the East edge.
Kessex Peak Area: I mention this here only because I'm not sure if I have the absolute edge of the map west of the tower. I went back to push edges of this map on a solo running build and even with repeated attempts I couldn't survive the mobs in that area long enough to be sure I'd pushed all the edges. [B]UPDATE 8/25 Jayla was kind enough to compare her Kessex map to mine. She's sure hers is complete to the west edge and tells me it's the same as my map. Thanks Jayla!
The Wilds Mission: That pond in the NE corner around the bonus bosses - there's an edge in there that doesn't uncover unless you get out on a spit in the water and wiggle a bit.
Bloodstone Fen Mission: There is a lot of map behind the final boss, Justicar Hablion. You can kill the first two groups that rush either side down off the stone, but then have whole party agree to run up and past Hablion, roughly in an easterly direciton. You can come back and kill him if you like after everyone's mapped back there.
The Falls Area: This is one of the most beautiful places in the game, IMO, and I've met so many people that never realized it was there. No quests lead you out this far; although recently they've added the enticement of Totem Axes to lure players. Getting there is so very worth the walk, but a lot of people get lost and can't ever find their way to the section that gives the map it's name. I went exploring with a friend the other day, and I took this SS of my U map when we were done. I've marked with green the route you take to get back up in there. It goes over a tree bridge that's unusually hard to spot from the apparent paths.

http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/711/thefallsrouteka6.th.jpg (http://img165.imageshack.us/my.php?image=thefallsrouteka6.jpg)

Aurora Glade Mission: If you're lucky enough to be in the rare party that can actually complete the bonus, be sure to run around back where the bonus boss is and uncover as much map as you can before lighting the final pedestal.
Tangle Root Area: This is one of those confusing maps where it's very easy to get lost and miss pathways. Drax and I were both missing the little corner spot ESE of the zone from HoD and both thinking we had the whole of Tangle Root uncovered. Extra credit to Drax for finding that area.
Riverside Province Mission: Mapping all of this will take even longer than doing the bonus here. Get a drink, a snack, and some good friends then settle in for a few hours. There's a lot of area to the south with undeadish things and you can push edges along the north (where there are some hill giants) at the final area with two towers. You can also get a few bits along the east edge of the map. Last but not least, you can get a spot or two when you get to the last boss at the bridge: kill him, drop the scepter on the west side of the bridge, then you can all cross the bridge and map over there. Then go back and carry the scepter over the bridge to end the mission.
Sanctum Cay Mission: Remember all those swarms of White Mantle that come after you? Remember running for your dear lives to get on the boat because, honestly, how on Earth could six people overcome all those Mantle? Well, get five friends and bring a lot of damage because you need to overcome them and lot more of their friends to get all of this map. Follow the mission as usual; stand there and protect the Vizier, but don't get on the boat. Instead, wipe out all those Mantle. Once they stop coming, you can go SE and NE to edges (SE is a big beach) with, yep, you guessed it, EVEN MORE white mantle ... but more map, too. Careful with the edges, a lot of that map is out in the water, so it will be hard to see for sure later if you've pushed the very edges or not.
Thirsty River Mission: You can uncover edge map if you get behind the little huts the bosses stand in. The hard part is remembering to do so up until the last boss - then you have to make sure the whole team understands not to kill that last boss (thus ending the mission) until everyone that wants to has had a chance to get behind him.
Dunes of Despair Mission: Time to commit suicide again. Take a close look at a completed map of Dunes - no way can you run all that in the few minutes of clock left when you'd normally attempt the bonus, especially when the area is absolutely swarming with buried Jade Scarab mines. So it's time for suicide again. Go through the mission and kill the enemy ghost. Don't let the hero get on the shrine though, make him stay back at the bridge. (If he gets on the shrine the countdown starts.) Go up on the ledge to the left of the bridge directly across the shrine. If you're lucky, there's a scarab or a boss enchanted out there that you can aggro from the ledge. Aggro him, but DO NOT continue to attack or he'll run away. Instead, have someone with a longbow shoot once just to get his attention and then stop. Have casters kill him with non-projectile, non-AoE spells (others will make him flee.) Then have a N/Mo or a Mo/N jump across with necrotic trav or consume corpse. The rest of the team dies off (health sac skills or vamp weapons) and is rebirthed over the gap. (Hold as still as possible once you get to the other side and wait for the whole team to cross - moving around much will get the few people over there overwhelmed with scarabs.) Once everyone's over, proceed very slowly in a narrow line. This is near impossible to do on a running build because of all the scarabs. You have to go slow and kill everything you find. While over there you can kill the three enchanted bosses to get the bonus for anyone that needs it, which is a nice bonus. ;) The map back here is huge. Also, there are two fortress looking things with raised bridges. There's map behind them. You can't lower the bridges, but luckily you can walk on air. Simply walk across like the bridge was down.

http://img165.imageshack.us/img165/1643/walkonairdg5.th.jpg (http://img165.imageshack.us/my.php?image=walkonairdg5.jpg)

WARNING - jumping the wall like this usually means your party cannot complete the mission, as you'll have no way to get back across and trigger the ghost. It might be possible to have one person stay behind and die to provide a corpse to jump back to, but then that person wouldn't get to map with you. IMO, it's much better to just go with a team who's goal is the map and/or the bonus where everyone understands this run won't complete the mission.

Like the Frost Gate mission, this requires that everyone other than a single Mo/N or N/Mo have a way to kill themselves in range of the rebirther.
Thunderhead Keep Mission: Most people I've seen know about this, but just in case ... There's a lot of map to uncover north of the fort. To do this, you simply need a good team with everyone understanding the plan. Survive the mission as normal, keeping the king alive. After you've killed the last group (white mantle with a boss,) no one talks to the king (doing so ends the mission.) Instead you can go out the gates and explore back there. There are a few groups of Mursaat, so you'll want to move in a group and be able to kill them off.
Also in THK there's an island in the SE, accessible by bridges, with lots of Avicara. There's no trick here, simply that most groups never bother with it.
Lornar's Pass Area: I spent a whole day mapping between Camp Rankor and Beacon's Perch. I took this one screenie of my Lornar's map because the bit of cloud circled in green didn't uncover until I got in the very corner (where the marker is) shown and wiggled.

http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/2636/lunysnolornarsbitnr7.th.jpg (http://img84.imageshack.us/my.php?image=lunysnolornarsbitnr7.jpg)
Ring of Fire MissionS: As I said before, I'm sure there are a few areas and edges of these maps that I haven't uncovered on the maps I post below. One notable spot is in Hell's Precipice. The cutscene where you kill Rurik jumps the whole party forward a bit. After the cutscene, you can all backtrack and find a large beachy area to uncover. I don't think I've ever done that on the character whose maps I'm posting. Please note that this Tyrian guide, my first map guide, has 3 different pages (links should be below and/or to the right on your screen.) This is page 2.

Maps

I took screenshots of my Tyrian map in hopes they'll serve as a good reference for others. I've updated these Tyrian map images with screenshots of large U maps. That removes the map markers and the moving cloud effect seen on the M map. I know there are some overlaps, but that's incredibly hard to avoid especially on the Tryian map.

I've tried to have every section of uncoverable map visible in at least one screenshot here. Please do let me know if you find that a specific edge or section is missing from any of my screenshots.

If you're having trouble figuring out what area my screenshots are of do ask (IGN removed, see the note in bold at the very top of the first page for contacting me) Although, if you have a lot of trouble identifying what my maps are there's a fair chance it's because you've really only explored a very little bit of the map so far.

In case you're wondering, yes I have a widescreen monitor.

I have similar guides for Cantha and Elona here at deuterio.net (http://www.deuterio.net) in the tutorial section. Neither are as long as this Tyrian guide; I didn't repeat the general theories and tips, and I found far fewer small bits of maps from the other continents that struck me as needing special discussion.

That's all. I hope this helps make more Grandmasters in Tyria.

Awesome - I'll be very glad if this helps other people ... I won't feel like such a map-happy freak ... if I'm surrounded by other map-happy freaks. :)

Thx to Hells for turning it into a guide!

The 2nd screenie of Kryta...How do you get on the little island?

If I´m not mistaken, that was the location of the Lions Arch arena, before they moved the arenas to the PvP Islands, it's not accesible anymore, but you should be able to reach 100% without it.

Yeah that's the old random arenas outpost, you could get there from Lions Arch, as Hell says you can't get there anymore, but it's not needed to get 100%

Why are my colors so different than yours in the screen shots? How can I make them identical?

Maybe Luny moved the gamma slider in the game settings, or maybe the map changed some colors with the introduction of GWEN.
